Another strong performance from Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS saw them take their eighth podium of the season, as they leapt back into the second spot in the constructors’ championship.
A powerful showing from Nico Rosberg gave the German a solid second-place finish on Sunday’s Indian Grand Prix, while Lewis Hamilton cruised to a respectable sixth. Together, the Mercedes drivers scored a valuable 26 points, sending the constructors’ team back into contention for the championship overall.
The team had also dominated Saturday’s qualifying, with Rosberg and Hamilton clinching the second- and third-place spots on the grid. With a Q3 time of 1:24.871, Nico Rosberg was the second-fastest racer of the afternoon, and Hamilton was hot on his heels at 1:24.941.
In the face of a loss of positions early on, both drivers fought intelligently on Sunday to finish comfortably within the points. Strong pit-stops from the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS team allowed both Rosberg and Hamilton to limit their damage. It was only because of slower cars at the head of the pack that the pair were not able to finish more strongly at the top of the podium.
Of course, the plaudits must go to Sebastian Vettel, who claimed his fourth consecutive drivers’ championship title, despite constant pressure from Mercedes drivers. The German has performed exceptionally throughout the season, but will need to be wary when he returns next year – both Mercedes racers are now hungry for his title!
There is still everything to play for in this championship overall, with Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS now looking to end the season in the top three.
Next weekend sees the Mercedes team travel to Abu Dhabi. The team will seek to extend the four-point lead over rivals Ferrari, and Lewis Hamilton will be hoping to topple Kimi Raikkonen, currently third in the drivers’ championship. Rosberg remains in sixth, but is now only four points behind Mark Webber – a strong finish in Dubai could prove a great coup for Mercedes.
Everyone here at Ridgeway will be rooting for the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS team as they head into the final three races of the season, and we hope you’ll join us.
